FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TUTORING AND ACADEMIC COACHING?
Tutoring is subject-specific. If a student is struggling in math, a tutor will re-teach information covered in class and/or prepare a student for a specific test. Academic coaching builds the core skills necessary in order to be a successful student. These skills may include organization, time management, note-taking, study strategies, self-advocacy, goal setting, etc.
WHAT ARE THE AGES OF YOUR CLIENTS?
The ages of academic coaching clients ages range from middle school through college, however, there is no age limit for clients seeking professional development consulting.
HOW DO YOU GET A CHILD TO BUY IN TO HAVING AN ACADEMIC COACH IF THEY ARE RELUCTANT?
It’s important to make a connection and build a unique bond with each client. Once clients begin, getting them to attend future coaching sessions is rarely an issue because they understand we are there for them through every step of their journey to success.
WHERE AND WHEN DOES COACHING OCCUR?
Currently, due to the coronavirus pandemic, all coaching occurs online. If and when it becomes safe to remove social distancing recommendations, local clients could meet at a mutually convenient location, such as a public library or coffee shop. Most sessions occur in the evenings or on the weekends.
WHAT IF I AM NOT LOCAL? CAN YOU STILL HELP?
Of course! Modern technology (FaceTime, Teams, Zoom, etc.) provides the flexibility to offer sessions to clients no matter the location. Therefore, instead of meeting face-to-face, we would talk via video conference.
HOW OFTEN DO YOU MEET WITH CLIENTS, BOTH ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL?
We usually meet with academic coaching clients once a week for 50 minutes. Depending on the professional development package obtained, we’ll meet with clients for 25-50 minutes per session and may communicate via email or phone in between, or in replacement of, video appointments.

During more stressful times, such as when a client is preparing for test or interview, additional sessions may be scheduled.
ARE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT CLIENTS REQUIRED TO MEET WITH COACHES FOR A CERTAIN NUMBER OF SESSIONS?
After completing the interest form, the coach and potential client will meet during a free consultation. During this meeting, we’ll learn more about your challenge(s) and goal(s) and discuss a few areas of opportunity and available service offerings and packages tailored to your need.
ARE ACADEMIC COACHING CLIENTS OBLIGATED TO ATTEND A CERTAIN NUMBER OF SESSIONS?
The number of sessions depends on the client’s goals and varies from student to student. Although we do not require a long-term commitment, coaching is not a quick fix. Instead, it is a partnership and process that takes time and effort. Therefore, packages are offered rather than individual sessions. Some clients only need a set of 4-8 sessions centered around a specific goal. The majority of students, however, have weekly meetings during the school year to keep them on track.
HOW LONG WILL IT BE UNTIL MY CHILD BEGINS SEEING RESULTS OF ACADEMIC COACHING?
As our process is tailored to meet the needs of each individual student, this varies, and each student’s progression will take time, commitment and partnership. Additionally, clients usually need to break bad habits and replace them with new ones to achieve academic success which also require the encouragement of parents and others within the immediate support system.
DO YOU GUARANTEE HIGHER GRADES?
No, and you are encouraged to be wary of any person or company who promises otherwise.
WILL MY CHILD’S ACADEMIC COACH SPEAK WITH HIS OR HER TEACHERS OR COUNSELOR?
We are happy to speak with other professionals on a limited basis at no additional cost. However, if asked to engage regularly or at length, a fee will be applied.
HOW WILL I KNOW WHAT MY CHILD IS WORKING ON WITH HIS OR HER ACADEMIC COACH?
To keep parents informed of what happens during sessions, coaches will provide summaries within 24 hours of each meeting. The summary will explain anything that was addressed, including skills and strategies taught. Parents are also welcomed to contact coaches via email or phone with additional questions or concerns.
